Today is Motherhood Monday Ficiton Meme #3. This is from Anonymom - Welcome to another weekly creative writing exercise for writer mamas! In honor of my vacation, our prompt is simply this:
A child collecting seashells
Now for my entry,
Every year on their trip to the beach, the childred would get excited about collecting shells. Yes, shells, not seashells because even though the shells come out of the sea, the children never made the connection. After settling in at the hotel, Hunter and Heather picked up their shell buckets and begged their mom to let them go shell hunting by themselves. Hunter was almost 11 but big for his size and Heather was 9 and as petite as she could be, a true study in opposites. Mom thought and thought and through the background noise of p-l-e-e-s-e from H&H, she reltented but admonished them to stay right in front of the hotel so she could see them from the balcony. H&H were good swimmers but their mom knew that even the best swimmers didn’t need to venture out without someone watching them.
H&H bolted out of the hotel room before their mom could change her mind. On their way to the hotel, they had dropped their dad at the golf course and he wouldn’t be back for a few hours and they planned to enjoy their independence. Mom felt just a tinge of uneasienss but knew that she would see everything from her perch on the balcony. She retrieved her book and proceeded to get comfy on the balcony. The kids yelled and waved at their mom when they reached the sand and she waved back and smiled, more to herself, as she saw her soon to be tweens head off for shell hunting.
Mom was reading her book one moment and the next she had dosed off. The combination of a long trip, soothing ocean air and the sound of waves hitting the sand was the perfect recipe for a nap. She awoke to her hubby gently shaking her awake and inquiring about the kids. Of course, she pointed to the last spot she remembered seeing them and through the slit of consciousness that was as big as her eyes, she realized that they weren’t there.
All of sudden, her eyes were as wide as saucers as she jumped out of her seat and started talking to her husband as her eyes scoured the beach for her kids. She was stil talking as she put on her shoes and grabbed her hotel key and her hubby had no choice but to follow as he hadn’t been able to get a word in as she kept apologizing for letting them go by themselves. They made their way down the steps two at a time to get to the lobby and out to the beach. Frantic, mom started yelling for Hunter and Heather and walking and talking to herself.

The time is quickly approaching and while some are already ‘back to school’, others are preparing to go back to school. I am participating in 2 homeschool related weeks so I am combining them into 1 here.
i have to say is hosting Back to Homeschool Week and Less of Me~More of Him is hosting a Homeschool Open House for the 2nd year.
Both weeks referenced above have a set of questions to answer regarding the 5 w’s and h of homeschool. I will primarily follow the schedule below for Back to Homeschool Week in that it anwsers all of the questions of the Homeschool Open House. 
Monday, August 6—What led to your decision to homeschool?
Why do you do what you do? What brought you to homeschooling? What factors played a part in your decision?

Tuesday, August 7—How do you homeschool?
Scheduling, classical education, unschooling, getting the kids to help with chores, how to be “mom” and “teacher” at the same time, special needs, teaching an advanced child, how to teach the tough subjects, teaching high school, teaching with babies and preschoolers in the house, budgeting for homeschool supplies, notebooking, etc., etc., etc…
Wednesday, August 8—Getting out there…
Extra-curricular activities, community involvement, volunteering, sports teams, music lessons, making sure your kids have opportunities to be social, co-ops, etc., etc., etc…
Thursday, August 9—If I had only known…
What have you learned on your homeschooling journey? What would you/did you change? This is an opportunity to encourage others who are just starting out or who are struggling with issues that seem unsolvable. It is also a perfect opportunity to tell us about one of those days made you want to throw in the towel. A funny story? Perfect!
Friday, August 10—Curriculum
What curriculum do you use? Where do you buy it? Have you found a “gem” that you must share with others? Was something in particular a complete failure for you and your kids?

Back to Homeschool
Our quick little jaunt to NJ was great!!! It was good to see how things changed, some for the better and some for the not-so-beter. There were some sad moments to see some things from my youth that have been closed down but it was also surprising to see some new businesses in their places.
There is really a lot to share and I don’t want to rub it in but I found some awesome deals at the auctions. I will be posting pics throughout the week being that I really need to nail down some homeschooling items and I have an idea of making my own outfit to head out for my birthday dinner, so we will see how much is shared and when it is shared. Just a teaser though are these aprons for less than $2.
The beach at Belmar was still the same. We went at about 6:30 p.m. and it was a bit chilly but there were still many people in the water. Here are some pics from the beach.
